Spare Canary
Foundation
Advancing the careers of risk, compliance, and trust & safety practitioners
The professionals who detect fraud, prevent financial crime, and keep digital platforms safe rarely receive the investment they give to everyone else. The Spare Canary Foundation exists to change that.
Who looks out for the canaries?
Risk, compliance, and trust & safety professionals keep the financial system and the internet safe for everyone. Yet despite the critical nature of this work, they are consistently the last to receive investment in their own professional growth.
Certifications go unfunded. Conference attendance gets cut from budgets. Career development is treated as a luxury. The Spare Canary Foundation exists to change that.
A well-supported canary is a more effective one.
For over a century, coal miners carried canaries into the mines as an early warning system against invisible toxic gases. The canary detected what humans could not — and its survival kept miners alive.
Risk, compliance, and trust and safety professionals serve that same function today. They detect the early signals of fraud, financial crime, regulatory exposure, and platform abuse before those threats become catastrophic. A well-supported canary is a more effective one.

How we invest in practitioners
-
Conference & Event Scholarships
Partnering with leading industry conferences to provide sponsored attendance for practitioners who lack employer-funded development budgets — covering events across AML, fraud, payments risk, and trust & safety.
-
Certification Grants
Individual grant funding for professional certifications including CAMS, CFE, CRCM, and others. A simple, accessible application process focused on impact over bureaucracy — because the practitioners who need this most don't have time for red tape.
-
Training & Webinar Access
Funding access to paid training programs, online courses, and professional webinars that build skills and keep practitioners current in a rapidly evolving regulatory and threat landscape.
-
Education & Community
Producing content that surfaces real operator perspectives from the risk, compliance, and trust & safety community — creating a platform where practitioners can learn from one another and find the support their employers may not provide.
The cost of staying current falls on the practitioner
The risk and compliance profession demands constant investment to stay effective. Regulatory frameworks shift. Fraud schemes evolve. Platform threats emerge overnight. Practitioners are expected to keep pace — but rarely given the resources to do it.
Professional certifications can cost thousands of dollars. Conferences run hundreds more. Training subscriptions add up across a career. For practitioners at community banks, early-stage fintechs, or under-resourced platforms, these costs fall entirely out of pocket — or don't get paid at all.
The result is a profession where the people most responsible for protecting others are often the least equipped to do their best work. The Spare Canary Foundation is here to close that gap, one practitioner at a time.
Built lean.
Built to last.
The Spare Canary Foundation is being incorporated in Missouri as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Spring 2026. The foundation is intentionally lean and mission-focused — designed to create direct, tangible impact for individual practitioners from day one, not years from now.
Every dollar raised goes toward practitioners. No bloated overhead. No bureaucratic delay. Just support for the people who've been waiting for it.

Shape something that matters.
The Foundation is forming its founding board of directors and seeking two additional members with complementary expertise. This is a ground-floor opportunity to help build an organization that makes a real, lasting difference for an underserved professional community.
